Maggie Downing

Executive Vice President

Maggie Downing has been involved in the efforts to restore the C&O Canal in Georgetown for nearly a decade. She began with the Georgetown BID in 2013 when she was tasked with bringing back boat tours to the Canal. In the years since, Maggie became Georgetown Heritage’s first staff, and managed the design of the canal boat and development of the interpretation and education plan.

Today she is excited to serve at the Executive Vice President of the organization, coordinating the work of the staff and board, engaging with the community, and helping secure funds to deliver on Georgetown Heritage’s vision of a world-class park experience on this mile of the canal.

Prior to her work in Georgetown, Maggie managed the Neighborhood Heritage Trails project for Cultural Tourism DC, overseeing community engagement and trail installation in seven neighborhoods across the District. She has also worked with the DC History Center, leading projects to preserve and share the history of the former Walter Reed campus and the Randall School in SW DC.

Maggie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Trinity College (CT) and a Master’s degree in Museum Studies from the George Washington University. She has called Mt. Pleasant home for 15 years.
