Canal Walks

Canal Boat Tours
Get your Canal legs! After more than a decade, a Canal boat returned to Georgetown. Public boat rides were available through Spring and Summer of 2022 and 2023, and over 35,000 people experienced the Canal from aboard, learning about the fascinating history, technology and culture of the C&O Canal, and the surprising stories of the people who lived, worked and played here over the past two centuries.
Canal Boat Tours will resume after the Locks & Walls construction project is completed, and water returns to the Canal!
School Programs
The C&O Canal is an educational treasure trove of history, wildlife, and STEAM learning. Our historic Canal Boat tours feature diverse scholarly resources and primary sources that connect to school standards (DCPS) in elementary education.
We welcome educators and administrators in the region to bring their students to the boat to learn about US 19th Century transportation, and the Canal’s important role in the nation’s growth, as well as some of the preservation and culture of the canal, past and present. We are also developing an in-school program to bring the history and technology of the Canal to classrooms!
